SMS messaging (text messaging) on phones is not considered secure because it is not end to end encrypted. This means that your phone carrier and potentially 3rd parties such as the government may have access to your text messages.
For this reason, a secure mobile messaging application is recommended for all users. My top pick is a free program called ‘Wire’. https://wire.com/en/app-download It is a free application for home users. It includes mobile and desktop applications. It is also end to end encrypted. Also, Wire is based out of Switzerland, which is one of the best company jurisdictions for privacy protection.
There are other alternatives to Wire. A Telegram secret chat would also be considered secure. Some recommend Signal. My notes on Signal would be that the application itself appears secure, however many Signal servers are hosted in Amazon data centers. And the Signal organization is based out of San Francisco in the US.
