Advantages of Software Sandboxing

Estimated read time 2 min read

Software sandboxing is a technical term that describes process of running an application in isolation. This is a nice security feature because it greatly restricts the ability of the application to access other resources on your phone or computer. This makes it harder for malicious applications to establish themselves on your phone or computer. By default, applications that you get through the app store on MacOS and iOS run in sandbox mode.

In Windows, applications are not sandboxed by default, but you can download free programs that allow you to run programs in sandbox mode. The program I like to recommend is a free open source program called Sandboxie. You can find it at this link https://sandboxie-plus.com/. They offer a paid version, but the free version is perfectly fine and does everything we need.

The best programs to run in sandbox mode would include your web browser and email program, basically anything that has a lot of access to internet resources. When you shut down your sandbox program it cleans up the environment of the sandbox and anything running in sandbox mode is shut down.

Sandboxing is not a substitute for other security measures such as running antimalware programs or using a firewall, it is something you can do in addition to those other measures to help you increase your ability to run programs securely.
